Pokémon TCG Market Watch: Tyranitar, Mew, and the Rise of Hidden Gems

Pokémon TCG Market Watch: Tyranitar, Mew, and the Rise of Hidden Gems As we move into the final quarter of 2025, the Pokémon TCG secondary market is heating up once again. From fan favorite Ultra Rares to promo cards that have suddenly caught the spotlight, this month is showing signs of both gradual growth and sudden spikes. Let’s dive into some of the most notable card trends of the season. Tyranitar V (Battle Styles) Current Market Price: $278.33 Recent High Sale: $276.69 Set: Battle Styles Rarity: Ultra Rare (Alternate Art) Originally released during the pandemic era Battle Styles set in early 2021, Tyranitar V (Alt Art) has always been a standout—thanks in part to its unique illustration and early supply issues. In the past month, we’ve seen a massive jump in price, with this “napping” Tyranitar climbing from $195 to over $270. While this price rise might feel sudden, it’s actually the culmination of a slow and steady climb dating back to August. Historical data shows this card has seen an annual price surge: $70 in 2022 $100 in 2023 $200 in 2024 Now approaching $300 in 2025 Collectors looking to pick this up might want to act quickly—this card's value trajectory shows no signs of slowing. Double Crisis Duo: Groudon EX & Kyogre EX Team Magma’s Groudon EX Market Price: $366.32 Live Listings: $400+ Set: Double Crisis Rarity: Ultra Rare Team Aqua’s Kyogre EX Market Price: $395.07 Live Listings: ~$430 2025 marks the 10 year anniversary of Double Crisis, and with it, a renewed interest in the only two cards of real value from the mini set. Both Groudon and Kyogre have exploded in price this year, with Near Mint copies now consistently listed well above $400. Groudon EX rose from $300 to $400+ in just the last two months Kyogre EX now commands up to $430 on secondary markets With these being the clear stars of Double Crisis, collectors and investors are doubling down before prices climb even higher. Team Rocket’s Wobbuffet (SV Promo) Current Market Price: $8.97 Recent Spike: $5 → $11 Exclusive Version: Pokémon Center Printing – $76 → $95 This cheeky Wobbuffet promo has seen a surprising resurgence this week, jumping from $5 to over $11 in a matter of days. While no major gameplay changes or tournament results appear to be driving the interest, the artwork and Rocket nostalgia seem to be fueling demand. Even more impressive is the Pokémon Center exclusive printing, which shot up to $95, up from just $76 last week. Zapdos ex (151, Special Illustration Rare) Market Price: $95.13 Past Value (6 Weeks Ago): ~$50 Set: 151 Rarity: Special Illustration Rare The hype around 151 continues, with Zapdos ex emerging as one of the hottest cards from the set. Just six weeks ago, Zapdos was hovering around $50. Now, it’s rocketing past $95, closing in on Charizard ex 199, which itself has surged from $240 to nearly $300 recently. Other notable 151 risers: Pikachu 173: $29 → $45 since August 10 While most cards in the set remain stable, it’s clear that the spotlight is firmly on Zapdos and Charizard. Fusion Strike Revival: Celebi V, Mew V & Mew Celebi V (Fusion Strike) Market Price: $77.63 Recent Price Surge: $58 → $75+ Mew V (Fusion Strike) Market Price: $144.10 Recent Spike: $90 → $120 (now selling at $140+) Fusion Strike’s alternate art cards are making a comeback. After months of flat pricing, both Celebi V and Mew V have made significant jumps in just the past week. The movement for Mew is particularly notable, given its already high profile. Mew VMAX (Secret Rare) Market Price (Sep 1): $150 Current Market Price: $196 Live Listings: $250–$300 Mew VMAX has been one of the strongest performers this month, climbing nearly $50 in just two weeks, with real world listings now approaching the $300 mark. Fusion Strike Top End Watch Espeon VMAX 270: Stable at ~$275 Gengar VMAX 271: $600 → $665 in just one month Though Fusion Strike initially got a lukewarm reception, its high end cards are proving to be long term value players. Gengar VMAX, in particular, has quietly gained $65 in value recently, reflecting consistent collector demand.

Magic: The Gathering Marvel’s Spider-Man

Magic: The Gathering Meets Marvel’s Spider-Man in September 2025 – Everything You Need to Know Magic: The Gathering’s latest collaboration with Marvel brings the legendary wall crawler to the battlefield this September with Marvel’s Spider-Man, a brand new Standard legal set packed with iconic villains, allies, and a few surprises from the Spider Verse. Whether you're a longtime Spidey fan or a Magic player curious about this web slinging crossover, here's your complete guide to key dates, mechanics, products, and more. Key Dates for Marvel’s Spider-Man Set Card Previews Begin: September 1, 2025 Full Card Gallery Release: September 5, 2025 Prerelease Events: September 19–25, 2025 MTG Arena / Magic Online Release (Through the Omenpaths): September 23, 2025 Global Tabletop Release: September 26, 2025 Spider-Man Gift Bundle Launch: October 17, 2025 MagicCon: Atlanta & Pro Tour: September 26–28, 2025 Spider-Man: The Final Battle Event: November 1–9, 2025 Set Codes: Main Set: SPM Eternal Legal Subsets: SPE and MAR Set Overview: Web Slinging Comes to Magic Marvel’s Spider-Man is part of MTG’s Standard format, meaning cards from this set will be legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Commander. The set is expected to remain in Standard rotation for the next three years. While this isn't a core MTG universe set (so no Planeswalkers here), players can expect a diverse lineup of legendary creatures, featuring Spider-Man’s famous rogues' gallery, trusted allies, and alternate costumes. Because of licensing limitations, Spider-Man cards won’t be directly available in MTG Arena or Magic Online. Instead, digital platforms will receive Through the Omenpaths versions — functionally identical but set within Magic's multiverse instead of Marvel’s. New Mechanics: Web Slinging & Mayhem Web Slinging The flagship mechanic of the set, Web Slinging, introduces an alternate casting cost mechanic. To activate it, players return a tapped creature they control to their hand. This adds strategic flexibility, similar to Ninjutsu, though without requiring an unblocked creature. Mayhem This mechanic allows a card to be cast for an alternate cost if it was discarded that turn. Unlike Madness, Mayhem follows normal timing rules, meaning it can’t be used at instant speed unless stated. This tradeoff grants players more control over mana usage later in the turn, but with fewer flash style tricks. Draft Format: Pick Two Draft Marvel’s Spider-Man introduces a Pick Two Draft experience. Draft pods consist of four players, and instead of picking one card per pass, players will pick two cards at a time. While the implications for gameplay and strategy are still unfolding, this format is designed to encourage synergy and faster deckbuilding. Product Lineup & Prices The set will be released with the full suite of familiar Standard products, along with some exciting new collectibles: ProductMSRP Play Booster $6.99 Collector Booster $37.99 Bundle $69.99 Gift Bundle $89.99 Scene Box $41.99 No Commander Decks… Yet This release will not feature any preconstructed Commander decks. According to Hasbro’s recent investment call, the focus is on accessibility and onboarding new players. However, with Marvel's multi year partnership with Wizards of the Coast, Commander decks featuring Marvel characters are expected in the future. New Player Friendly: Welcome Decks To help new players join the game, the set includes Welcome Decks, each focused on a single color and character. Each contains two 30 card decks, making them ideal for casual play and learning the game at local events or stores. Collectibles and Special Treatments Scene Box Following the trend set by The Lord of the Rings and Assassin’s Creed, the Scene Box contains six Borderless cards that combine to create a larger scene from the Spider-Man universe. The Soul Stone – Headliner Card Marvel’s Spider-Man includes a Headliner chase card — The Soul Stone, which appears in Textless Cosmic Foil exclusively in Collector Boosters. These ultra rare cards are estimated to appear in less than 1% of Collector Boosters, based on previous pull rates. Borderless Source Material Cards (Set Code: MAR) These reprints of existing Magic cards showcase classic Marvel comic art, including iconic panels and covers. With about 40 cards in total, they appear in roughly 1 in 25 Play Boosters, while foil versions are exclusive to Collector Boosters. Costume Change Spider-Men With Spidey's long history of costume changes, this set includes seven unique Borderless Costume Change cards, available as Textured Foils in Collector Boosters. Non textured versions appear as part of the Marvel Legends Figures series. Spiderweb Basic Lands Full Art Spiderweb Basic Lands are available in both foil and non foil versions. These can be found in Play and Collector Boosters, with Bundles including one foil and one non foil copy of each land.
